# Create equity or token tax event

POST https://api.letsdeel.com/rest/equities-tokens/tax-events
Content-Type: application/json

Records an equity or token tax event, such as a vest or exercise, against a contract and adds it, pending verification, to an open monthly equity payroll cycle. Use it when reporting a tax event for a worker who is already onboarded to Equity & Token Services.

 **Token scopes**: `equities:write`

Reference: https://docs.deel.wtf/api/reference/endpoints/equity-tokens/create-equity-or-token-tax-event-v-2026-01-01

## Authentication

- `Authorization` header (bearer token, required) — ## Authentication The Deel API uses bearer tokens to authenticate requests. All API calls must be made over HTTPS — calls over plain HTTP or without authentication will fail. ```curl curl -X GET 'https://api.deel.training/rest/v2/contracts' \ -H 'Authorization: Bearer YOUR-TOKEN-HERE' ``` [Learn more about authentication](/api/authentication)
- `Authorization` header (bearer token, required) — Standard OAuth2 security scheme based on https://swagger.io/docs/specification/authentication/

## Servers

- `https://api.letsdeel.com/rest` (Production, default)
- `https://api-staging.letsdeel.com/rest` (Demo)

## Request

### Body (application/json)

This endpoint expects an object.

- `data` (EquitiesTokensTaxEventsPostRequestBodyContentApplicationJsonSchemaData, optional)

## Response

### 201

The tax event was created successfully.

- `data` (EquitiesTokensTaxEventsPostResponsesContentApplicationJsonSchemaData, optional)

## Types

### EquitiesTokensTaxEventsPostRequestBodyContentApplicationJsonSchemaData

- `fx_rate` (float, required) — The exchange rate used to convert the local currency to the payroll currency
- `contract_id` (string, required) — The Deel contract ID of the EOR worker the tax event applies to
- `plan_currency` (string, required) — The ISO 4217 currency code in which the equity/token grant was issued
- `settlement_date` (string, required) — The date the equity event was settled (i.e. when shares were transferred or cash was received)
- `payroll_currency` (string, required) — The ISO 4217 currency code in which the payroll is processed
- `tax_jurisdiction` (string, required) — The ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country code of the worker's contract jurisdiction, used to determine applicable tax rules
- `taxable_gain_or_loss` (float, required) — The taxable gain or loss on the event, typically gross value minus the total exercise price
- `total_taxes_withheld` (float, required) — The total amount of income tax and social contributions withheld on behalf of the worker
- `method_of_tax_coverage` (enum, required) — How the benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax on this equity event is collected. BIK_WITHHOLDING_* values indicate the employer withholds tax from payroll; the suffix identifies the mechanism (e.g. at-source deduction, salary deduction, net settlement, grossed-up bonus). BIK_REPORTING_ONLY reports the BIK without withholding. NO_BIK_NO_WITHHOLDING applies when no taxable benefit arises. AD_HOC covers special cases outside the standard methods. Note: cashout methods (CASHOUT_WITH_TAXES_WITHHELD_AT_SOURCE, CASHOUT_THROUGH_PAYROLL) are handled via internal processes and are not accepted through this endpoint.
  - Allowed values: `AD_HOC`, `BIK_REPORTING_ONLY`, `BIK_WITHHOLDING_AT_SOURCE_CLIENT`, `BIK_WITHHOLDING_AT_SOURCE_CLIENT_REVERSE`, `BIK_WITHHOLDING_GROSSED_UP_BONUS`, `BIK_WITHHOLDING_NET_SETTLEMENT`, `BIK_WITHHOLDING_SALARY_DEDUCTION`, `BIK_WITHHOLDING_WORKER`, `NO_BIK_NO_WITHHOLDING`
- `withheld_tax_local_currency` (float, required) — The income tax and social contributions withheld, expressed in the worker's local payroll currency
- `benefit_in_kind_local_currency` (float, required) — The benefit-in-kind (BIK) value reported to payroll, expressed in the worker's local payroll currency
- `tax_rate` (float, optional) — The tax rate applied to the benefit in kind
- `unit_fmv` (float, optional) — The fair market value of the equity/token grant at the time of the event
- `event_date` (string, optional) — The date the equity or token event occurred (e.g. vest date, exercise date)
- `sale_price` (float, optional) — The price at which the equity/token was sold
- `gross_value` (float, optional) — The gross value of the equity event, calculated as unit FMV multiplied by quantity exercised or released
- `exercise_price` (float, optional) — The price at which the equity/token was exercised
- `equity_grant_id` (string, optional) — The unique identifier of the equity/token grant. Omit this property if the grant ID is not known.
- `transaction_fees` (float, optional) — Brokerage or transaction fees associated with the equity event, in plan currency
- `quantity_remaining` (float, optional) — The number of shares or units remaining after the event
- `total_exercise_price` (float, optional) — The total exercise price paid for the equity, calculated as exercise price per unit multiplied by quantity exercised
- `quantity_withheld_or_sold` (float, optional) — The number of shares or units withheld (for cashless exercise) or sold to cover taxes
- `quantity_exercised_or_released` (float, optional) — The number of shares or units exercised or released in this event

### EquitiesTokensTaxEventsPostResponsesContentApplicationJsonSchemaData
